Level 14 is coming — after battling in the arena for more than 5 years, the King will get a makeover in the upcoming game update, with his maximum level increased from 13 to 14.
We’ll focus on tower and card upgrades for Level 14 in this post, but there will be more sneak peeks arriving soon!
Breaking Update (2021-10-22) — The Clash Royale team admitted that they have overlooked an essential aspect for the Slash Royale event — card consumptions and post-update cost reductions.
To make up for any uninformed spending decisions players may have made, Supercell has decided to compensate ALL players with the extra cards spent in card upgrades before the new levels are released.

Progression
Supercell’s vision for 2021 has been about progression. At the beginning of the year, Clash Royale introduced Magic Items, which helped players with card material progression. This Summer, we’ve received the Gold Crate update which helped players accumulate Gold. We’re now near the end of the year and the Clash Royale team feels that it’s now time to level up!
Level 14 Cards
With the King going to Level 14, cards will have a maximum level of 14 as well. Fear not — the material and gold costs will not be doubled for the next level up. The costs will instead be redistributed in the last few levels. Upgrading from Level 13 to 14 will cost the same as upgrading from Level 12 to 13 right now. The material and gold costs for Level 11-13 will be lower, depending on the Rarity.

When King Level 14 was announced originally (2021-10-21), players who have completely maxed collection will have to start their card collection as Level 13 and with 0 progress towards Level 14. This created a somewhat troubling scenario where players who didn’t upgrade their cards can be closer to meeting the material level 14 requirements than a fully maxed player.
The Clash Royale team has always intended the Slash Royale event to be a celebration of the arrival of Level 14. And after the community outcry, realized that they have missed an essential aspect for the Slash Royale event — card consumptions and post-update cost reductions.
To make up for any uninformed spending decisions players may have made, Supercell has decided to compensate ALL players with the extra cards spent in card upgrades before the new levels are released.
In other words, any card material cost will be redistributed when the update arrives. This means that players who already own a maxed Epic card that took 386 cards to max will now start with a Lvl 13 card with 160/200 Progress, instead of the 0/200 Progress as originally announced. Similarly, a Lvl 13 maxed Legendary card before the update will start as 14/20 progress towards Level 14 once the update drops.
If configuration redistribution is hard to imagine, here are the numbers as it pertains to the cards that you would’ve lost previously:

Note that the table above shows the total compensation. For example, each Level 13 Epic card will have 160 cards compensated. (The numbers are not added together)
With card material costs completely redistributed into the new level configruations, the balancing act of having to decide whether or not to upgrade during Slash Royale is no longer an issue. We can now tell you with full confidence that upgrading your cards during Slash Royale is the best decision you can make.
The only thing to keep in mind is that if your goal is to max a full deck again, you do still need Gold to complete the Level 14 upgrades — upgrading 8 cards from Level 13 to 14 will cost 800k Gold. So only upgrade cards that you need, and save the Gold you may need in the future.

Level 14 Towers
The King and Princess Towers will have higher Health (HP) and Damage (DMG).

Experience Level (XP)
Experience Levels will have different values and distribute differently when the update arrives. Unlike card upgrades, you won’t need to start from your current level. All of your XP accumulated will be redistributed. For many Level 13 players, it’s highly likely that your King Level will be upgraded to Level 14 when the update goes live!
The XP required to go from Level 13 to 14 is 80000 — the same as Level 12 to 13 right now.

Do I keep my star levels if I spend all of my Star Points now?
Yes, you will keep your star levels. What you’ve earned is yours.
The King Level Forecaster said that I’ll be Level 14 when the update drops. If I spend all of my star points right now, will I still be Level 14?
Yes. Although Star Points are gained through experience points (XPs), they are separate resources. Spending Star Points does not reduce your XP. Star Points are rewards for players when they have reached Level 13 — they are something extra.
Although visually the XP gets “converted” into Star Points, in reality you have a hidden XP value associated to your account, and Star Points is a form of a reward that only players at Level 13 can get.
XPs only go up. They can’t be “spent”. So if the Forecaster said that you will be Level 14 then you will definitely become Level 14 when the update goes live.
I am Level 13 right now. Why does the King Level Forecaster say that I’ll still be Level 13 when the game updates?
Some players make the incorrect assumption that the King Level conversion is a simple +1 — that is not the case at all.
What actually happens is that the XP requirements for the King Levels are getting updated, and so a player’s XP will need to be redistributed to find their new level.
The only type of Level 13 players that are guaranteed to be Level 14 are those who have a completely maxed card collection — mostly because the experience points they have gained from card upgrades far exceeds the requirements to get to Level 14.
In all other cases, it depends, and that’s why we’ve made the King Level Forecaster to help you figure that out.
Card Upgrade Strategy (old: original analysis)
We are including our old and outdated analysis here for completeness. Please note that this recommendation is no longer relevant after Clash Royale has made the public announcement.
The lower prices for upgrades only apply to the cards you haven’t upgraded yet. In other words, players won’t be reimbursed if they had paid more in the past. When the new level is available, cards that were previously at the maximum level will not have any material progress towards level 14.
Interestingly, cards that hadn’t been upgraded and were at levels 12 or below can have excess cards due to the now lower upgrade requirements, resulting in an overflow into the level 14 progression. This means that players who didn’t upgrade their cards can be closer to meeting the material level 14 requirements than a fully maxed player.
With Slash Royale being active right now, the million-dollar question is: should you upgrade your cards to take advantage of all card upgrades being 50% off at the event?
It depends.
If you only factor Gold into the equation, then upgrading cards right now is advantageous. We get a slightly different picture if we also consider card material costs. If you haven’t yet upgraded your cards to the maximum level, you will now have an overflow that will help you towards the Level 14 upgrade requirement.
Based on the card rarity values, some of these upgrades remain as efficient decisions, while others become the opposite. In our calculations, by converting the the card material costs into their gold equivalent, you might be better off not upgrading Epic and Legendary cards during Slash Royale. Upgrading Commons and Rares appear to give good value regardless.
The caveat of this math is that it assumes that the material cost is always an important factor, when in reality it’s not always the case. For example, if you’re going to use a Magic Book to reach level 14 material requirements, then the overflow won’t be valuable. But the Magic Items inventory is very limited, so these details won’t be very important for those who plan to upgrade their entire card collection.
On the other hand, long-time players know that Gold is always the limiting factor for upgrades. If you have played the game long enough, then you’ll naturally accumulate enough cards to reach new levels, but you’ll note that Gold is never enough.
With so many factors to consider, you are ultimately the only one who can decide for yourself whether upgrading right now during Slash Royale is the best decision.
