Three Musketeers History
Many years ago, Three Musketeers used to be a fairly popular deck archetype. Paired with the Elixir Collector, the huge elixir cost of this card became more manageable.
But over time, it has become mostly extinct. Balance changes to the Elixir Collector, addition of triple elixir... there were multiple factors contributing to their demise.
If we look at stats from this year, it’s easy to see usage is very low. These are the amount of players who finished in the Top 1,000 in recent seasons:
| Season | Month | Players | Usage |
|---|---|---|---|
| S75 | September | 10 | 1.0% |
| S74 | August | 2 | 0.2% |
| S73 | July | 4 | 0.4% |
| S72 | June | 3 | 0.3% |
| S71 | May | 5 | 0.5% |
| S70 | April | 8 | 0.8% |
| S69 | March | 15 | 1.5% |
| S68 | February | 8 | 0.8% |
| S67 | January | 2 | 0.2% |
The highest season was March, with 15 players; but usage is usually below 1%.
To be fair, not all the stats are as grim as usage. At the time of writing, Three Musketeers has the highest win rate of the 20 Win Challenge (albeit 1% usage).
But leaving stats and popularity aside, there’s an arguably more significant issue with this card:
Normal Musketeer is a classic and basic part of the Clash Royale meta. The balance of this card seems much more important than the viability of Three Musketeers.
This is a very big constraint for any attempts to make 3M more appealing. Aside from changing elixir cost and deployment configuration, there’s not much else to do that wouldn’t also impact the normal Musketeer.
We think this dilemma is what led to the decision to give Three Musketeers a big rework; removing this dependency will allow future balance to be much more flexible.
Three Musketeers Rework
Three Musketeers will now deploy 3 Elite Musketeers. This is a new troop, with different stats than a normal Musketeer.
There are multiple things changing at once:
- Deployed troop
- New card art
- New card description
The old description was:
Trio of powerful, independent markswomen, fighting for justice and honor. Disrespecting them would not be just a mistake, it would be a cardinal sin!
And the new one is:
An elite trio of powerful, independent markswomen with perfectly coiffed helmets and bayoneted boomsticks.
They slash, shoot, and slay in the name of justice and honor.
Elite Musketeers
Elite Musketeers are a bit worse as ranged units. Their Damage per Hit is slightly lower, but the main change is the slower Hit Speed. Overall, this means an Elite Musketeer has 22% less DPS than a normal Musketeer.
But this new troop doesn’t just have slightly different stats, the rework introduces a new mechanic for close range attack: Bayonet Attack!
Against ground targets that get within a distance of 1.6 tiles, the Elite Musketeer deals melee damage with her bayonet instead of the usual ranged attack.
Here’s a quick comparison of the two troops:
| Troop | Musketeer | Elite Musketeer | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| HP | 721 | 883 | +22% |
| Damage | 217 | 204 | -6% |
| DPS | 217 | 170 | -22% |
| Hit Time | 1.0 | 1.2 | +20% |
| Range | 6.0 | 6.0 | = |
| Speed | 60 (M) | 60 (M) | = |
| Melee Damage | - | 314 | - |
| Melee DPS | - | 262 | - |
| Melee Range | - | 1.6 | - |
The melee DPS (314) is 28% more than the DPS of a normal Musketeer, and 54% more than the ranged DPS of Elite Musketeer. Will this close-range strength be enough to make up for the lost ranged damage? We’ll have to wait and see.
Overall we think this is an interesting rework that can potentially fix the main issues with this card. Even if it’s a bit weak at first, the card can now be balanced more freely.
