Magic Items - 2021 Q1 Game Client Update

A new game client update is coming (tentatively next week it’s live now!). Along with balance changes — which we cover in a separate post — Clash Royale will introduce Magic Items, a new group of items intended to help players with progression.

By far, one of the most frustrating aspects for players in Clash Royale has been the time it takes to upgrade an account and their decks. This update intends to address this by making it easier to upgrade cards and decks, especially when the meta shifts due to balance changes.

Changes in progression aren’t only useful to new players, but they can also be very helpful for maxed players during new card releases.

Wild Cards

• Converts into any card that you have unlocked
• Comes in 4 types for each rarity
• Inventory Cap
  • If a player is near his/her storage cap and collects a stack of Wild Cards, he/she can collect the wild cards over their storage cap.
  • If a player has maxed his/her inventory and collects a stack of Wild Cards, then the cards will be automatically converted to a random card of the same rarity.
  • If that random card is already maxed, then the player will receive the Gold equivalent, similar to how it is now when player receive cards for any of their maxed cards.

Book of Cards

• Instantly fill up all remaining cards required to the next upgrade level
• Comes in 5 types: 4 for each rarity, and a special “Book of Books” for any rarity
• The maximum value for a book is when you upgrade cards from Level 12 to Level 13, especially when you have just upgraded the card to Level 12 and want to get to Level 13 immediately.
• You don’t get any “left-over” cards
• Example:
  • Your Knight is Level 12 and at 2000/5000.
  • You use a Common Book of Cards to fill up the remaining 3000 cards needed.
  • When you’ve used your book, it will fill out the remaining 3000, but you won’t get 2000 extra cards converted to Gold even though technically the book could give you a maximum of 5000 cards.
  • Important: filling out the rest of the cards does not upgrade the card to Level 13. You still need 100,000 Gold to complete the card upgrade.

• Books have a maximum inventory storage of 1.
• If you try to collect a Book and you are over the limit, you’ll get a Warning Dialog.
• If you proceed, your book will be converted to its overflow value.
• All the books give 100 Gem for overflows.
• Considering the maximum value of a book could be as much as 400,000 Gold , make sure you know what you are doing before collecting!

Magic Coin

• Fills up all the Gold required to upgrade to the next level without using any of your Gold.
• Maximum Value: 100,000 Gold when you upgrade cards from Level 12 to Level 13.
• Overflow: 100 Gem

Chest Key

• Instantly finishes a Ladder chest opening timer
• The longest time to open a chest is 24 hours, which costs 144 Gems to open immediately
• This means that the maximum value of a Chest Key is 144 Gems
• Overflow: 100 Gold

Saving Magic Items for New Cards

Magic Items can be useful to upgrade new cards after they are released. Finding clanmates willing to exchange their cards is a problem of the past. If you’ve accumulated some Magic Items, maxing a new card is just a few taps away.

Let’s look at the most extreme example: Legendary cards. You'll need a total of 35 to fully upgrade a Legendary card:

Cards Needed
= Total - 1
= 2 + 4 + 10 + 20 - 1
= 35

If you’ve managed your upgrades correctly, this can be solved without passing the inventory limits. A Magic Book can help you with the last 20 for the max level, and the first 15 can be exchanged with the Legendary Wild Cards; you can have up to 20, and you'll only need 15.

Rare Cards will need additional book

Cards of all rarities can be upgraded with Wild Cards and a book… EXCEPT for Rare cards. The storage maximum for Wild Cards is 1000, and is unfortunately 585 short of the 1585 required. So for Rare cards, you will need to either have 585 regular cards, or use an additional Book for it.

Thankfully, Pass Royale comes with a Book of Books. So if you have saved up a Rare Book of Rares, or have the Book of Books from the previous season, then you’d still be able to max the card on Release Day!

Where to find Magic Items

• Magic items can be found in:
  • Chests
  • Trophy Road
  • Challenges
  • Shop Offers
  • Pass Royale (Free)
  • Pass Royale (Paid)
• Wild cards are the only Magic Items that can be found in chests.
• At launch, every player will receive a FREE Epic Book and Magic Coin (Re: Free Magic Items at Launch)

Wild Cards in Chests

• All chests have a chance of wild cards starting in Arena 4
• The likelihood of Wild Cards appearing in chests is based on the Arena Level of the chest.
• The King’s Chest and the Legendary King’s Chest give a guaranteed amount of wild cards instead of using a probability / chance factor.

Regular Chests

• All the cards you get in chests have a chance of becoming Wild Cards of that same rarity.
• The likelihood of each card becoming a Wild Card depends on the rarity and the level of your King Tower.
• For example:
  • If your chest gives you a Legendary card, there’s a 25% chance that it will be a Legendary Wild Card.
  • If your chest gives you a Rare card and you are Level 10, there’s a 7.5% chance that it will be a Rare Wild Card.
• This means that value of the chests does not change, but now you have a chance of getting cards as Wild Cards instead, and will help your upgrade progress.

Legendary King’s Chests

• King‘s Chests and Legendary King’s Chests have a guaranteed amount of wild cards.

Arena

Wild Cards on Trophy Road

• Card rewards (or draft choices) on the trophy road are replaced by Wild Cards of the same rarity.
• There is no change in value or resources because the values are not changed.
• This means that player will now have better control of how they would like to progress.
• Inventory Limits are checked.

Magic Items in Pass Royale

• Pass Royale now unlocks at King Level 4.
  • Note: this means that you won’t be able to buy Pass Royale as a Level 1 anymore.
• The Book of Books will be a Pass Royale exclusive and will not be available in offers / other places.

• Increased value: 1200+ gems of free value

Arena 4-6 Free Track

• Increased value: 375+ gems of free value

Arena 7+ Paid Track

• Increased value: 7400+ gems of free value

• Magic items that are most likely to appear in challenge rewards include:

• Most likely to appear in offers:

• In Arena 4+, chests purchased in shop offers contain a chance of Wild Cards.

Inventory Limits

• There is a limit of how much you can store for each Magic Item.
• Each type of Magic Item has an inventory cap.
• The inventory limit depends on the player’s King Level.
• Upgrading your King Tower level will help tremendously for you to progress your account.
• If a player purchases a Magic Item from the Shop, he/she will be allowed to go above their storage cap.

Magic Items: End Note

Magic Items is Supercell’s first step to streamline player progression for everyone. It may not be the most exciting news for players who already have maxed accounts, but remember that players thriving is what drives new content for everyone. The best new content is the content every player can enjoy!

Free Magic Items Gift at Launch

Update: 2021-03-30

In our original article, we’ve published that the free gift at launch will be a Book of Books. At launch, the free gift in-game is an Epic Book and a Magic Coin.

We've reached out to Supercell and found out what happened.

The information we've published was based on an internal game design document provided to us by Supercell. Unfortunately, it appears that the document was outdated.

Supercell made the decision to launch with an Epic Book and Magic Coin, as Gold is more valuable to players looking to progress their account.

Clan Wars 2 Changes

• You can now nudge players
