Brief history
In April of 2021, Supercell first announced 3 new games for their Clash IP: Clash Quest, Clash Mini & Clash Heroes. Several months later, in November of that year, the beta for Clash Mini would start in selected countries.
The game was an auto battler with Clash characters. In this genre, players draft and deploy units that later fight autonomously against opponents, over several rounds.
After years of big tests and changes, in March of 2024, Supercell announced "Clash Mini Ending Development". This was the end of the beta for this game.
In that announcement, Supercell also committed to "bring the Clash Mini experience to Clash Royale".
The next stages of the adaptation were conducted away from the public. We knew that the idea hadn’t been abandoned, but not much more.
The next development of this story happened towards the end of the year, during RovioCon 2024. In this event, Aleksandar Markovic (Clash ROyale’s General Manager) shared some plans for the future of the game, and a vision for "Royale as a strategy hub experience".
This hub would host different games instead of just Clash Royale traditional battles, and adding Clash Mini is the first step in this direction. Aleksandar also stated that the plan was for this to happen in June 2025.
So here we are, the last day of June and ready to fulfil this goal!
Merge Tactics isn’t Clash Mini
Merge Tactics is an adaptation of the auto battler genre to fit Clash Royale.
It has some similarities with Clash Mini and was developed mainly by the same team, but it’s a new game. Both share core goals, such as making this genre more accessible, casual and appealing to a broader audience.
There are a lot of significant changes, from art style to grid layout. But enough of looking back, let’s find out more about this new mode!
Merge Tactics Summary
In Merge Tactics, 4 players compete against each other. They pick Clash Royale troops, deploy them and let them fight.
Battles are based on several rounds, each of which has:
Deploy Phase: buy/sell troops, merge them and place them in the arena.
Battle Phase: troops fight automatically until all the troops of a team are defeated.
When the round is over, the defeated team loses some HP and a new round begins. If a player loses all their HP, they are eliminated.
This round loop repeats itself until only one player remains, the winner of the battle. Overall, this takes an average of 5-8 minutes, slightly longer than normal Clash Royale battles.
Battle Phases
Strengthen your team, defeat your opponents and survive until the end!
Deploy Phase
Gain Elixir each turn and spend it by tapping or dragging one of the three Troops to summon them to the Arena.
Drag Troops back to the shop to sell them.
When a battle starts, you’ll see an almost empty arena. You have 1 cheap troop, already deployed, and the shop at the bottom.
The shop always features 3 troops, each with their own elixir cost. Your available elixir is displayed to the right, in the big yellow drop.
You can buy troops by tapping or dragging them to your arena/bench. After you buy a troop, the shop is refreshed and 3 new options are displayed.
You can sell troops by dragging them back to the shop, or tapping in the sell button from the troop stats window. The sell price is the total buy value minus 1 elixir.
The amount of troops you can buy is limited by the team size + bench size. The bench size always has 5 slots, and the team size increases from 2 to 6 as rounds progress.
Two Troops of the same Merge Level will automatically merge into a stronger one!
Summon Troops with the same Traits to activate powerful bonuses!
Merge Levels are displayed with stars, from 1 to 4:
- 1-star (bronze): 1x base Damage and HP
- 2-star (silver): 2x base Damage and HP
- 3-star (gold): 4x base Damage and HP
- 4-star (chromatic): 8x base Damage and HP
Given that each merge requires 2 troops, the aggregated power is equivalent to the sum of all the merged units.
Merging a troop gives a bonus 1 elixir. This can be used to get something out of bad troop purchases even if you aren’t planning to deploy them.
During battles, you can tap on troops to see their stats. This opens a window that displays:
Troop name, cost, collection level and merge level
2 Traits
Basic stats such as HP, Damage, hit time, Critical chance and range
Ability description and ability levels
Sell button with sell price
Battle Phase
This is a mostly passive stage in which your deployed team fights against an opponent.
When all the troops of a player are destroyed, that player loses the round and their Ruler receives damage. This damage is equal to the amount of remaining troops plus 1.
During this stage players can also engage in limited activity, such as:
Buying troops from the shop
Selling troops from the bench
Levels & Mode Progression
Merge Tactics is integrated into Clash Royale, which means it doesn’t have an entirely separate progression system.
Troop Cards
The core progression of the game, card/troop levels, are shared with your main CR collection. However, in this mode levels are much less relevant, as stats scale by just +2% per level; in normal Clash Royale they scale by +10%.
MT has a card pool of 20 cards, so not all the CR collection is available here. This card pool may change in the future, if the mode returns with a new season.
Rulers
The other side of progression in MT is with Rulers, analogous to Tower Troops in some ways. These rulers have special abilities and are a permanent part of your team during battles.
Merge Tactics launches with 2 Rulers:
Royale King: losing grants you +4 Elixir
Spirit Empress: every merge grants you +1 bonus Elixir
Each Ruler has Levels, Ruler Skins and Ruler Confetti. All of these are cosmetic changes for now. Basically, levelling up unlocks new Ruler Skins and Ruler Confetti to customise your Ruler.
Leagues and Rank
Merge Tactics has 10 leagues for players to climb based on Merge Trophies. These leagues unlock badges, modifiers and a few one-time rewards.
The main road is based on ±30 Merge Trophies, as usual, and the last league is at 3,500 trophies. The full league distribution is:
- Bronze I: 0 - 199 trophies
- Bronze II: 200 - 399 trophies
- Bronze III: 400 - 699 trophies
- Silver I: 700 - 999 trophies
- Silver II: 1,000 - 1,399 trophies
- Silver III: 1,400 - 1,799 trophies
- Gold I: 1,800 - 2,299 trophies
- Gold II: 2,300 - 2,799 trophies
- Gold III: 2,800 - 3,499 trophies
- Diamond: 3,500+ trophies
After reaching Diamond, the last league, player can compete to reach the top of the leaderboard.
The final rank won’t be displayed on the badge when the season ends, but players do earn a badge for the league they reached.
Mode Rewards
The incentives to play this mode aren’t very strong, mainly because Supercell wants this test to be organic and not to force players into it. Aside from having fun, these are the main reasons to play it:
Earn a Badge for reaching higher leagues. This badge won’t have a final rank.
Collect 1-time rewards from the Merge Tactics trail. These are mostly random cards in small quantities.
Crowns for Events and Pass Royale progress. Players get a Crown for every round they win.
Daily Rewards can also be obtained by playing MT. For a battle to be considered a win, players must finish 1st or 2nd out of the 4 players.
Mode Integration
Although this mode is quite complex overall, integration within Clash Royale isn’t complete. It’s likely that this will change in the future once the appeal for this mode is better understood, but for now, it’s worth mentioning the missing features:
No battle logs or ways to see your results over time
No way to find MT stats from other players, aside from their current league
No API integration, meaning that we won’t be able to provide live content and stats for this mode
No friendly battles, the only way to play this mode is through the main ranked matchmaking
Advanced Stats
We encourage you to try this mode yourself, and slowly discover all the available with this mode. But if you want to take a quick look now, this section has a summary of all the Troops, Rulers, Traits and Modifiers.
