The 2nd evolution slot!
Do you remember what we said when card evolutions were released?
... Over time, when more evolutions are released, more evolution slots will be added.
With 13 evolutions available (soon), Supercell thinks this is the time to take that step!
The 2nd evolution slot allows you to add another evolution to your deck. You might have tried it already in some Global Tournaments, as it was being tested to see if there was already enough evolution variety for the change to feel right.
The conclusion from this experiment was that yes, there was! So this season the 2nd evolution slot is being added to other game modes.
At the moment, players only unlock this 2nd evolution slot after reaching King Level 54, which is when your King Tower becomes Level 15. From KL7 to KL53, players will remain with 1 evolution slot in their decks.
This means that underleveled players will now have an even bigger disadvantage against Level 15 players.
Where will the 2nd slot be available? Everywhere, including Path of Legends, Trophy road... and even Clan Wars! This means that to have a top tier deck set you'll need to have 8 evolutions.
Expected consequences of the 2nd slot
Regardless of whether you are excited about the second slot or dislike it, it's undeniable that this change will be very significant for Clash Royale overall. These are the main consequences we are expecting:
New strategies and synergies will appear based on evolution pairs; due to the strength of evolutions, these pairs will become the main force that shapes the meta.
For content creators, content based on decks will become more challenging and also create new opportunities due to the KL54 divide. Underleveled players will no longer be able to simply copy decks from top players, as these will usually include 2 evolutions. This also affects us, RoyaleAPI, as a lot of deck pages that used to have universal utility will now mainly be useful to maxed players.
The 2nd slot in deck sets will become a significant obstacle for players who want to compete in Duels format: mainly Clash Royale League and Clan Wars. The total of 8 evolutions needed to fill all the slots is simply not within reach of players who didn't buy Pass Royale or shop offers several times.
After taking into account all the community feedback regarding the new evolutions, both will have some changes on release that aim to make them more balanced.
NERF: Bomber Evolution: No HP buff
The 25% HP bonus is being removed, meaning that Evo Bomber will be just as vulnerable to spells as the normal one; it will die to Arrows.
Other stats like cycle count or bomb bounce range will remain as strong as we announced, so it's likely going to be a great evolution regardless.
REWORK: Wall Breakers Evolution: Stage damage switched
Now the last stage, Runners, will deal twice as much damage. This means that the 2nd stage will deal the same damage as normal Wall Breakers.
In contrast, the barrel walkers will deal half as much damage when destroyed, meaning that they'll have a harder time breaking through swarms. For example, a single explosion will no longer be enough to kill Goblins.
Additionally, the Runner’s speed will change from Very Fast to just Fast.
Are you excited about the second evolution? Which combination will be the strongest of all?
