Card Matchup - New RoyaleAPI Feature

If you’ve used our Matchup feature before, then you know how useful it is when comparing strength between two decks.

Today, we’re rolling out Card Matchup, a sister feature that measures the performance of a card or a deck by looking at their performance against all cards in Clash Royale.

Table of Contents

Card Matchup

We have added a new tab to the Card Detail page. You’ll now be able to see how any card in Clash Royale performs vs all other cards.

As an example, see the ultra strong Mighty Miner’s Card Matchup where he appears to beat most cards!

Display Modes

Two modes are available: List and Grid.

  • List. List view shows all the matchups in a long vertical list.
  • Grid. Grid view shows all the matchups in a grid. It is slightly more compact.

User Interface

Both modes give the same information.

  • Blue bar. The Win Rate for the card.
  • Red bar. The Loss Rate for the card.
  • Sample size. Sample size where the win rates are calculated. For example, in the example screen above, we have found 42885 games where Mighty Miner faced against Wizard. In those games, player who played Mighty Miner won 77% of the time, and lost 23% of their games.

Card Matchup in Deck Stats

We have long had Deck vs Deck Matchup info on the Deck Stats pages — accessible when you tap on any deck on our site. One challenge for deck vs deck is that sometimes the sample size could be quite small for decks that are quite new.

Today, we’re adding Deck vs Card Matchup. This gives a much better overview about the strength of a deck, since the sample size can be a lot bigger — given that there are usually hundreds of variations of meta decks that are played.

Summary

The summary view gives an overview of how a deck performs against win conditions. At launch, they’re defined with the following parameters:

  • Good against. Win Rates >= 60%
  • Bad against. Win Rates <= 40%

Detail

If you wish to drill down further, full stats for all the cards / win-conditions are available on the UI. Similar to Card vs Card Matchup, you can choose to display the results in either List view or Grid view.

Meta Decks

Meta decks, by definition, are decks that perform extremely well within the current meta. You will see these top decks when you visit our Deck Search. If you look at their corresponding Card Matchup, it is easy to see why — they are good against lots of the win conditions in the game.

Evergreen Decks

In contrast to meta decks, evergreen decks are decks that are popular for many seasons. They are strong in the hands of one-trick players, but statistically they do not necessarily perform well against most decks out there.

Card Matchup - New RoyaleAPI Feature

For example, Hog 2.6 Cycle as a whole does not win against most archetypes. Yet it remains very popular mostly because of the deck’s loyalist and potentially because of the wide availability of videos out there.

Parameters

At launch, all card matchups are calculated using these parameters:

  • Time: 7 days
  • Game Modes: Grand Challenge + Ranked Battles (Path of Legends)

We have made many adjustments during our development and we believe that these parameters give the most reliable results while having representative and adequate sample size.

Based on your feedback, we may adjust these parameters over time.
